Hard Bean Coffee in Lumberton & Beaumont: Local Favorite Serving Global Blends

Hard Bean Coffee: How Diane Martin Built a Southeast Texas Favorite

When Diane Martin opened Hard Bean Coffee in Lumberton back in 2017, she wasn’t just opening another coffee shop. She was creating a place where community, culture, and quality coffee could meet.

Nearly a decade later, Hard Bean Coffee has become a local landmark in Southeast Texas, with two thriving locations — one in Lumberton and another in Beaumont. What’s the secret behind its success? A mix of resilience, global coffee blends, and a passion for people.

Brewing Coffee That Tells a Story

Unlike chain shops, Hard Bean Coffee offers a unique eight-bean espresso blend sourced from world-renowned coffee regions:

    • Mexico – smooth and nutty

    • Kenya – bold with wine-like acidity

    • Costa Rica – balanced and bright

    • Ethiopia – fruity and floral

    • Guatemala – rich and chocolatey

    • Indonesia – earthy and full-bodied

Diane insists on only using beans grown above 3,000 feet. At that altitude, coffee plants thrive without pesticides, producing beans that are pure, clean, and naturally flavorful.

    A Business Built on Grit

Running a coffee shop isn’t just about pouring lattes — it’s about long hours, smart business choices, and heart. Diane knows this well.

“I work 4 a.m. to 4 p.m., six days a week,” she says. “If you think you can open a business and just hire people to run it for you, you won’t make it.”

That determination has carried Hard Bean Coffee through tough economic times when other local shops closed their doors.

    Coffee With a Community Purpose

Hard Bean Coffee isn’t just a caffeine stop — it’s a safe space. With Lumberton High School right across the street, Diane designed the shop as a welcoming spot for students.

“I wanted to give them a safe place to be instead of waiting outside,” she explains.

This sense of community has made Hard Bean more than a coffee shop. It’s a gathering place where locals meet, students study, and travelers rediscover flavors they’ve tasted around the world.
